Planting packages to have farms and forests instead of waste landfills

This post illustrates the idea of planting packages by describing the process on a  glass bottle. This example can be modified and extended for paper  and plastic packaging as well.

1. A simple beer bottle is made of glass and is one of the most wasted packaging items

2. A seed which is genetically transformed for use in packaging will be used. The seed has a lifetime of the package without being spoiled. The seed may be potato or corn seed which is used for making biodegradable plastic.

3. The seed is placed within the based of the glass bottle. The seed is in a condition that once the bottle is disposed it will be of use in the farm.

4. All the disposed glass bottles are transferred to the waste landfill

5. All the bottle glasses have seeds

6. The seeds start to grow

7. The seeded bottle glasses are planted in the farm which turns the landfill to a farm ready for agriculture

8. Outcome: Have farms instead of waste landfills

RSA/Milk to orange juice/Projection or google glass

1.Current Waitrose packaging for milk
2. Future packaging: no printing

3. Put a chip on the sustainable material

 4. Small chip is used for different size of packaging
5. Consumer touches certain point on the package
6. The chip will activate
7. Data is either projected or shown via Google glasses for the consumer

8. Sample application is used which projects and shows the information in detail

9. wash the packaging and remove the chip
10.Upload the new information into the chip
 11. Reuse the packaging for similar products

RSA/Milk to orange juice/QR code or VR code using mobile

1.current Waitrose packaging for milk
2. Future packaging: No prints on the packaging

4. Put a QR or VR code on the sustainable material
 3. Consumer can get the date by using a mobile application

5. The consumer scans the QR or VR code on the package
6. Consumer will see the VR and the information about the content of the packaging within the app
7. Illustration below shows how the sample application and detailed information may look like
8. wash the packaging and remove the QR or VR code
9.Update the VR or QR code for new product information

 10. Reuse the packaging for similar product

RSA Project Outline

Research Question
With ever increasing trend of products becoming digitised, design of product packaging will no longer be in the current forms, as we know it. New dimensions will come to play when designing packaging for a digitised or virtual reality products
I’m going to find answers for effective and efficient packaging design for better communication with end customer as well as tools and software required to achieve this.
Outline
I envision that future products may no longer exist in their current format & become more about data packs which can be purchased by the consumers & either 3D print them at home or visualize the data by AR/VR means. In the nearer term packaging needs to be revolutionized by becoming a commodity that it no longer ends up in the landfills. The packaging needs:

·       Have the right physical attributes such as shape, form, material for production economics & transportation  & final display on the store`s shelves
·       Have the right branding info for the producer of the product
·       Provides the end user with sufficient information about the product inside
·       Meets regulations around packaging & product
·       Made of different pieces that are reusable or hireable

Methodology
My research will evolve around researching current developments in packaging by reading through journals & various books. It will involve discussion with industry experts & graphic designers specialised to the field of packaging before coming up with new methods for futuristic packaging design based on AR or VR based mobile applications with simple and non printed packaging & possibly implement it.
